SHAYKH MUSLIH AL-DIN SA'DI (D. 1292 AD): DIWAN PROBABLY TABRIZ, IRAN, DATED 6 RAMADAN AH 718/1 NOVEMBER 1318 AD Poetry, Persian manuscript on paper, 153ff. plus 11 fly-leaves, each folio with 19ll. of black naskh divided into two columns with red intercolumnar rule, headings in larger naskh in either black or red ink, copious notes in the margins in nasta'liq and naskh , five illuminated headings with the white thuluth in a gold cloud on a ground of scrolling gold arabesques bordered by square cartouches containing either gold lotus flowers on green ground or geometric motifs, cusped palmettes extending into the margins, five colophons four of which are flanked on either side by gold and polychrome scrolling vine and rosettes, a note on the colophon of the Nasihat al-Muluk with the date in a contemporaneous hand probably copied from a now lost original colophon, the colophon at the end of Kitab al-Bada'i' states that the manuscript was copied from Sa'di's own copy, a large gold and polychrome shamsa , incomplete at the beginning and end, in a modern green stamped morocco with marble paper doublures, with cloth covered archival box Text panel 8 x 5½in. (20 x 13.8cm.); folio 11 5/8 x 8½in. (29.8 x 21.4cm.)
