SHIPWRECK WORLD WAR ONE 'HMS GHURKA' BRASS SHELLCASE AND WOODEN SHELL CARRIER 20th century AD A group of two items recovered from the wreck of HMS Ghurka comprising: a wooden carrier with five circular vertical holes to accept shells, slightly curved with vertical slots to the ends and four attachment holes to the rear face; a shell case for a 12-pounder gun stamped on the end 'RL/i', '1905', 'N5' under the war department arrow, 'CF' and '12', with screw closure in place, still in the end hole of the carrier when recovered. 5.3 kg total, carrier: 67cm, case: 40cm (26 1/4"). Fine condition. [2, No Reserve] Provenance Recovered by the vendor from the undersea site, off Dungeness, Kent, UK, 1980, (prior to the site's designation under the Protection of Military Remains Act, 1986); with an information sheet. Footnotes HMS Ghurka was a 'Tribal Class' destroyer built in 1907 by Hawthorn Leslie and Co. at Hebburn, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She served in the North Sea and English Channel with the 6th Destroyer Flotilla and took part in anti-submarine action in the Straits of Dover. She was sunk when she hit a German mine off Dungeness, Kent, on 8th February 1917. Only five of the 72-man crew survived the wreck.
