Beschreibung:

a pair of richly embroidered shoulder straps with double border having a single star of a brigadier general on a black velvet background. These were the personal effects of ill-starred Brigadier General Edwin H. Stoughton, then the youngest general officer in service, who commanded the 4th Vermont and later the 2nd Vermont Brigade. Stoughton was a West Point graduate who was captured by partisan ranger John Mosby in the famous raid on his headquarters at Fairfax Court House on March 8, 1863. The General and 32 others were taken prisoner and held briefly at Richmond's Libby prison until exchanged in May 1863. The high-profile fiasco effectively ended Stoughton's military career for upon release he was not given another command. He subsequently resigned and resumed his law career in New York City but died suddenly on December 25, 1868. The shoulder boards were originally sold in April 1999 as part of a larger group of related material consigned to auction by General Stoughton's grand-grand niece, Susan Laura Stoughton Bell. A dated, notarized letter of provenance and copy of the original auction catalog accompany the historic boards. Provenance: April 1999 Vagabond Auction, via Stoughton Descendant Condition: Stoughton boards are EXC.
