SIATA DAINA CABRIOLET VIN. #SO194 - A CAR SYMBOLIZING THE 1950s IDEA OF LUXURY - DESIGNED BY FELICE MARIO BOANO - PRODUCED IN FEWER THAN 200 UNITS - FULL RESTORATION JUST COMPLETED - WITH PRESENT OWNER FOR AROUND 10 YEARS The company S.I.A.T.A. (Società Italiana Applicazione Trasformazioni Automobilistiche) was founded in 1926 in Turin by Giorgio Ambrosini, a wealthy car enthusiast and talented amateur driver. Initially, its purpose was to construct special components designed to increase the performance of the asthmatic engines of the time, and the work focused, in particular, on the most common ones, produced by Fiat. The name S.I.A.TA. earned a strong reputation in the field, above all for its highly effective head with overhead valves designed for the Fiat 500 ‘Topolino' and the Fiat 508 Balilla. A Balilla, equipped with the most powerful engine available for the model, complete with compressor, actually succeeded in taking home a speed record for its class (up to 1000 cc), registering over 154 km/h, an excellent result for a small 1930s car. Ambrosini, however, was keen to try his hand in the racing sector; Fiat cars powered by S.I.A.T.A.-modified engines, often driven by him in person, frequently turned in brilliant performances. Subsequently, all young novice riders wanted a 'Topolino' with a S.I.A.T.A.-modified engine, as they felt this would give them their best chance of establishing themselves in their class in all the most important races, including the Mille Miglia. However, for S.I.A.T.A., the real turning point came immediately after the Second World War, when Ambrosini decided to start building his own automobiles, albeit with Fiat-derived mechanics. In 1948, the company unveiled the Amica, which had a Fiat 500 engine and an in-house designed tubular chassis, and it was followed, in 1950, by the Daina. The latter was created immediately after the standard Fiat 1400 sedan (the first Fiat with a self-supporting body), of which it was a derivation, featuring a shorter wheelbase. However, it had the same engine, with the output increased from 45 to 65 HP and an exclusive five-speed gearbox that increased its scope for use, both on the track and on everyday roads. With its luxurious finishing, the Daina was aimed at a very refined public. It was offered in a cabriolet version with bodywork by Farina (as well as in a coupé version, also produced by Bertone). The cabriolet version was produced in fewer than 200 units. This one offered for sale, produced in 1952, has been with the same owner for around 10 years. It has just completed a full restoration that involved the bodywork, mechanics and interiors.
