SICILE, Herald to Alfonso V, King of Aragon (15th century). Le Blason des armes nouuellement imprime . [France, early 16th century]. Small 8 o (135 x 92 mm). 28 leaves. Batarde type. Large woodcut coat-of-arms on title, repeated on final leaf, and 123 small woodcut coats-of-arms in text, all but six COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND, woodcut initials. Old reverse calf, 36 blank leaves bound at end (chip at head of spine, some wear). Provenance : B. Maria Bamonsion (signature on title and first text leaf); Lucius Wilmerding (bookplate, his sale Parke Bernet 30 October 1951, lot 871); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 18 October 1955. A VERY RARE EARLY EDITION OF SICILE'S 'BLASON DES ARMES,' with text beginning "purce que a toutes manieres de gens..." Brunet notes, in his description of the early editions of the text, that he had seen a copy of this edition bound with the Blazon des couleurs as here. Several editions, both dated and undated, were published in the first half of the 16th century. The present copy has the ligatures correctly colored throughout by a contemporary hand. All editions of the Blason des armes are scarce: only a single edition (Paris: Parion de Malaunoy, after 1500) is recorded in American Book Prices Current in the last 30 years (Sotheby's London, 28 June 1991, lot 511, imperfect: 23 of 28 leaves only).
