Vignetted view of Nathaniel Michler, ink signed on verso, With the Compliments of N. Michler, Major of Engineers, Bvt. Colonel U.S.A., Petersburg, VA, July 28th 1865. With Alexander Gardner / Philp & Solomons, Washington, D.C. backmark. Easton, PA, native and USMA graduate, Nathaniel Michler (1827-1881) served in the U.S. Army from 1848 until his death in 1881. He enlisted in 1856 as a 1st Lieutenant and was commissioned into the US Army 1st Battn. Engineers on May 19, 1856. During the Civil War, Michler was promoted to Captain, 9/61; Major, 4/64; Lt. Colonel by Brevet, 8/64; Colonel by Brevet for his actions at Petersburg, 4/65; and Brigadier General by Brevet for his actions during the Rebellion, 4/65. Condition: Image has lightened a bit, signature on verso remains very good overall. Previous owners penciled notes on verso.
