The author, who lived at Makaweli, Kauai, gives the native names for each plant depicted together with a short physical description, a note of its preferred habitat and any uses to which the plant was put. "According to H. St. John in Pacific Science 8: 140-146 (1954) this is 'the first book with colour pictures of Hawaiian flowering plants...Even today it has more colour plates of Hawaiian plants than any other book'", Sitwell and Blunt p.139; Nissen BBI 1848.
