SIR EDWIN HENRY LANDSEER (1802-1873); SIR JOHN TENNIEL (1820-1914); GEORGE LOUIS PALMELLA BUSSON DU MAURIER (1834-1896); SIR JOHN EVERETT MILLAIS (1829-1896) AND OTHERS A collection of letters to William Powell Frith from various artists, mostly 8°, about 40 pages in total, dating from 1st April 1869 to 30th March 1905, many referring to John Leech (1817-1864). Including: Autograph letter signed (Yours ever "Landseer"), one page, 8°, on St John's Wood Road N.W. and Stag's head emblem headed paper, 1 April 1869 thanking Frith for his note and attributing his recent lack of work output to his "(Eyes!)". He promises to contact him, "I much want to see your fine things". Two autograph letters signed ("Very sincerely yours John Tenniel"), 6 pages, 8°, on 10 Portsdown Road, Maida Hill, W. headed paper, 9 January 1905, (one incomplete, paper discolouration). The first congratulating Frith on his 87th birthday. He declines a dinner invitation on account of his age, "In plain truth I go nowhere and never leave the house if I can help it! So this poor little note must needs suffice for heartiest congratulations". The second mentioning the death of John Leech Two autograph letters signed ("G. du Maurier"), 5 pages, 8°, on New Grove House, Hampstead Heath headed paper, 28 July 1890 and 11 May 1895. The first discussing the death of John Leech "I will try and collect my scattered wits and memories, and send you what I can recall", and suggesting names of those who might be able to assist Frith in his research, including Millais who was "devoted to him, as Thackeray was"; also Holman Hunt and Tenniel. Two autograph letters from Sir John Everett Millais signed ("J E Millais"), 6 pages, 8°, on 2, Palace Gate, Kensington and Birnam Hall, Birnam, N.B. headed paper, 1 April 1882 and 9 October 1890 (light spotting). Mentioning John Leech "Alas the portrait of John Leech was stolen out of my studio, with other things by, I imagine, a model or picture collector". With 11 other autograph letters and an envelope from various artists including George Cruikshank Lawrence Alma Tadema and Frith. (17)
