Autograph letter signed ('John A Macdonald'), one p. 8vo. Ottawa March 11th 1878 to Dr. Digby concerning the general election, June 1878. "Private", folded; In full "My dear Dr. Digby An occasion occurs sometimes once only a mans life to do great good. I write to press upon you that that occasion has arisen in your case and I beseech you to embrace it. The battle between Conservativism and Grittism between loyalty and disloyalty - between protectism and "Yankee Nations" is to be fought at the General election in June - If with all our present advantages we don't Carry the Country now we may give up the fight for our day and generations. I shall for one cease the useless contest. Now you by a general Consensus of the party can carry South Brant and I appeal to your patriotism to do so - I know the sacrifice I am asking you to take, but i do ask it - At the end of the first session, you can if you find you must in justice to personal interests retire you can do so - for the battle will then have been won. Pray seize the standard. Carry it to the front and secure the eternal gratitude of the Conservative Party and of yours Sincerely / John A. Macdonald Dr. Digby / Brantford" written on 'A Cowan and Sons Ivory' paper.,
