Sir Sidney Nolan (1917-1992) Collage Newsprint, wash and notes 23.5cm x 18.5cm, unframed Provenance: Gift from Nolan to John Whillock and thence to the vendor Sir Sidney Robert Nolan OM, AC (1917 - 1992) Born in Melbourne, Nolan attended the National Gallery Art School and subsequently Atelier 17, under the surrealist, S W Hayter. A close friend of art critics, John and Sunday Reed, he was regarded as a leading figure of the 'Heide Circle' (named after Heide, the Reeds home outside Melbourne - now the Heide Museum of Modern Art.) In 1938 Nolan married Elizabeth but the marriage soon break up. In the 1940's he joined the Angry Penguins (a literary and artistic avant-garde movement). Having left the army during WWII, Nolan lived with the Reeds and painted the first canvasses in his famous, iconic 'Ned Kelly' series (stylised descriptions of the bushranger in the outback now held in the National Gallery of Australia since 1977). During this time he embarked upon an affair with Sunday Reed although he married John Reed's sister, Cynthia in 1948. In 1950 he moved to London where he remained until his death. After his marriage to Cynthia ended he married Mary Boyd in 1978. In addition to the Ned Kelly series, Nolan also painted a wide range of personal interpretations of historical and legendary figures. Nolans' paintings can be found in the National Gallery of Victoria, The Nolan Gallery Foundation Collection, the Art Gallery of South Australia and Tate UK.
