SIR WALTER SCOTT (1771-1832); WILLIAM MAKEPEACE THACKERAY (1811-1863); ARTHUR WELLESLEY, 1ST DUKE OF WELLINGTON (1769-1852); & OTHERS A large quarto calf gilt album entitled 'Autographs and Franks', containing approximately 350 signed envelopes, some with wax seals and approximately 80 other letters and cut signatures, pasted down into the album, including: Autograph fragment of 13 lines, signed 'Walter Scott', Edinburgh, 27 February, n.p., regretting he is unable to look over their 'literary compositions' due to 'the state of my mother and the number of my engagements', it is 'the third packet of poetry which I have received within this week' and begs to be excused as 'There are many judges of literature in Edinburgh who can advise you better than I'. One-page autograph letter, signed 'Wm. Thackeray', from the Brighton and Sussex Club, n.d., 8°, to Brooke, 'Dinner will be charming' but he can not attend 'having only one coat to my back. But the ride in the East Wind? I think I can better employ my time than that...' One-page autograph letter, signed 'Wellington', from London, 17 April 1820, 8°, to Mr Morrie, requesting to meet at Stratfield Saye. with various other letters and cut signatures including Harriet Beecher Stowe, Agnes Strickland, James Burke Joseph Dalton Hooker Sophie Raffles, Lady Caroline Nevil, the Duchess of Marlborough and the visiting cards of Dwarkanauth Tagore and Henry Lytton Bulwer; the envelope fronts, many entirely autograph and dating from the 1830's, from various nobility, politicians, clergy and military figures such as 'Elgin', 'Gray', 'Robert Peel', 'W.E. Gladstone', 'Palmerston', 'Dundas', 'Daniel O'Connell' and others such as Humphry Davy and Thomas Babington Macaulay.
