Two months later, however, he transferred to submarines, joining the depot ship Lucia, an appointment followed by a brief spell at Dolphin towards the War’s end. Hayes remained employed as a submariner for several years, served in K. 11 in early 1921 and in K. 2 from March 1921 until January 1923, gained advancement to Chief Petty Officer (Telegraphist), and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in December 1927. Returning to regular seagoing duties in the cruiser Calcutta in September 1928, he was commended by his Captain for fitting out the S.S. Deucalion with short-wave transmission in record time, on the occasion the latter ship was charged with searching for a missing Danish vessel in the South Atlantic, and again in 1930, when he maintained wireless contact with the research ship Discovery in the Antarctic, when civilian wireless communication had broken down. Pensioned ashore in November 1934, Hayes was recalled on the renewal of hostilities, and served at the R.N. base Pyramus at Kirkwall from September 1939 until June 1942, followed by similar shore appointments in Pembroke, Scotia and Wildfire, from which latter establishment he was demobilised in August 1945. (afterwards Rear-Admiral Sir Stuart), who describes Hayes as ‘one of he best men I have ever had serving with me’ (dated aboard H.M.S. Sussex, 20 August 1934), and his Order for Release and accompanying letter conveying Their Lordships appreciation of his services in the last war, dated 14 August 1945.
