A sixth plate ambrotype portrait of an unidentified early war private wearing a state-issue nine button shell jacket with stand-up square collar. The young volunteer is posed before a “gabled house” painted canvas backdrop documented in photographs of North Carolina soldiers. Condition: The glass plate is unfortunately cracked having been meticulously pieced back together so that the integrity of the portrait is preserved if not its artistry. The edges are taped in the style of a daguerreotype with the brass hardware and glass placed over the plate “for effect.” No effort was made to remove the plate snug in the case to check for writing. The image displays a silvery tone with about average clarity. Housed in a repaired composition case.
