Exceptional collection of original drawings and watercolors by a skilled and insightful artist with a fine sense of both humor and humanity. Each of the drawings and watercolors is captioned, and include scenes of military endeavors, Capetown vistas, caricatures of the variety of ethnic groups, Boer prisoners, garden scenes, and more. Among the drawings: "View of Capetown from Leeuwen Street"; "Poor Tommy Passes in His Check" (with a bullet through his forehead); "What Kaffirs Do with Their Spare Time" (not much, apparently); "A Malay & His Harem" aboard a horse-drawn buggy; "Kaffirs at the Brickfield Sunday"; "8 AM Bottom of Bree St." in front of a whiskey shop; "The Girl Ain't Coloured She Was Born That Way," watercolor of a well-dressed black woman; "Boer Prisoners" being escorted by British troops; "Coloured Refugees Dock Road"; and many more. An important collection capturing the events and time of the last British colonial war.
