Title: Sketch of Public Surveys in New Mexico, to Accompany Report of Surveyor General 1857 Author: Pelham, William Place: Washington Publisher: Date: 1857 Description: Lithographed map. 51.5x77 cm. (20¼x30¼"). Pelham's map on New Mexico was first issued in 1856, which Wheat remarks as showing "that a start [on the survey] had been made but that precious little had been accomplished to date. Apparently all that had actually been done (and that is problematical) was to survey a line north from an initial point in the valley of the Rio Grande, near Albuquerque (which is not named), to Taos. The remainder of the map, which includes present Arizona..." The map has been slightly updated, and is an interesting if rather barren depiction of the Southwest so recently won from Mexico, with Santa Fe nestled among mountain ranges, settlements and forts along the Rio Grande shown, various rivers shown, etc. See Wheat Transmississippi 854. Lot Amendments Condition: Darkening and splitting along one fold, else very good. Item number: 168142
