New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1857. 8vo (135 x 147 mm). Original brown printed wrappers. Condition: dampstain to preliminaries, toning; lacking rear wrapper, some rubbing and browning. early printing of dred scott v sandford. Scott, having lived as a slave in two states where slavery was prohibited, sued to gain his and his wife's freedom. Although initially successful, Scott was eventually ruled against in the Supreme Court. A landmark case in the debate over slavery in advance of the Civil War, the ruling undid the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and re-asserted the fact that African Americans could not claim citizenship in the United States.
