Title: Small archive of photographs, journals and other material relating to the 1926 Field Museum Peru-Central American archaeology expedition of W. Egbert Schenck and A.L. Kroeber Author: Schenck, William Egbert Place: Various places Publisher: Date: 1926-1927 Description: Includes: Typewritten journal in two parts, with tipped-in photographs and postcards, the text comprised largely of copies, or perhaps drafts, of letters written to his parents during the expedition. The first part details the trip to Peru and investigations in Peru, comprising approx. 71 typed leaves of text and some 115 photographs and postcards, mounted on leaves (mostly two per leaf), many with typed or handwritten captions. The second part covers a trip to Central America, with approx. 40 typed leaves and 24 photographs and postcards tipped to leaves. There are a number of ink drawings, corrections, emendations, etc., in the journal. Each part held together with binder rings at the top. Approx. 96 additional photographs and postcards, half loose, the others tipped to plain paper leaves. Plus approx. 30 negatives of photographs. Most of the loose photographs with ink captions on the verso. Small notebook with handwritten text and sketches, detailing the excavation of a number of graves or tombs. Approx. 92 pages. Larger notebook with handwritten text, drawings, and pasted-in photographs of Hacienda Chorrillos. 9 pages plus blank leaves at end. Folder with 36 pages of typed “Field Notes. Field Expedition to Peru of 1926. (Kroeber-Schenck).” With some ink sketches. Letter from D.C. Davies, Director of the Field Museum of Natural History, certifying that “Mr. W. Egbert Schenck…is associated with Dr. A.L. Kroeber in the expedition to Peru.” Three maps, a few related newspapers, etc. The archive is housed in two contemporary file cases. Significant archive relating to archaeological and anthropological investigations in South and Central America, the material apparently unpublished. Basically a self-trained archaeologist and anthropologist following an early business and diplomatic career that took in to the Far East, Mr. Schenck gained respect and approbation from his colleagues, serving as Associate Curator in the Museum of Anthropology at the University of California. He was the author of several books, mostly on archaeology in California and Baja California. The present archive could easily serve as the basis for another book, with detailed and insightful descriptions of the peoples and ruins investigated, and original photographs of the sites uncovered and the lands around them. Lot Amendments Condition: Some normal wear, overall very good. Item number: 273141
