SMITH, Betty (1896-1972). A Tree Grows in Brooklyn . New York: Harper & Brothers, n.d (after 1943). 8 o. Original blue cloth (faded along spine and edges, some wear to ends of spine); pictorial dust jacket (worn); quarter morocco folding case with colorful onlay duplicating the image from the dust jacket. Provenance : Elsie Mae Gordon (bookplate, presentation inscription). Later edition. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY SMITH on the title-page: "To Elsie Mae Gordon with regards Betty Smith." In 1945 Elia Kazan made his directorial debut in the film adaptation of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn . Following the trials of a tenemant family living in Brooklyn during the turn of the century, Smith's novel would also serve as the basis for a Broadway musical.
