Map of the Vicinity of Philadelphia from Actual Surveys.
Camden: Lloyd Van Derveer, 1851. Engraved map, dissected into 34 sections and linen-backed, hand-colored (922 x 880 mm). Decorative border containing five inset views: general view of the city from Camden, Girard College, the State House, Laurel Hill Cemetery and the Schuylkill River with the Sweet Briar Ice House. Contemporary marbled paper board slipcase. Condition : the map bright and fresh; the slipcase worn and split. Provenance : Martin P. Snyder. a lovely copy of a highly decorative map. This detailed map, which includes more of New Jersey than generally found on maps of Philadelphia (including Gloucester, Camden and Burlington counties), was apparently engraved by Charles Reen, whose name appears in reverse in the foliage at the lower portion of the inset view of the city. It appears to be based on Sidney’s 1847 map. Smith was an interesting character. Descended from James Logan, Smith’s father was the librarian of the Library Company. In additon to being a mapmaker, publisher and salesman, R. P. Smith was among the leaders of the Holiness Movement in New Jersey in the 1860s. Phillips, p. 706 (listed as anonymous); Phillips, Descriptive maps and views of Philadelphia 425; Ristow, “Map Publishing Career of Robert Pearsall Smith” in Library of Congress Quarterly Journal, vol. 26.
