SMITH & Son, Charles, London SMITH'S TERRESTRIAL GLOBE Containing all LATEST DISCOVERIES. LONDON SMITH & SON 63 CHARING CROSS [c.1850] A 16-inch (40.6cm.) diameter terrestrial table globe made up of two sets of eighteen slightly hand-coloured engraved gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees, hours and minutes in two directions, the four meridian lines graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with symbols, the oceans with an analemma and numerous notes including various tracks for Cook, Clerke, Gore, La Perouse, Ross, Vancouver and Columbus outward in search of America in 1492 , with numerous further notes such as Nameless I. according to Anson's Chart , 13 Low I s. inhabited , Fatsisio whither the Japanese Grandees are exiled and others, Anarctica with numerous notes including Appearance of Land , Land, discovered by Captain Wilkes, U.S.N. Jan y.1840 , Active Volcano 12400f t.high , Highest S. Latitude yet reached and Perpendicular Barrier of Ice Ross, 1841 , the continents with national boundaries shown in dotted outline with light red or blue hand-colouring, showing numerous details including towns, cities, rivers and mountains, China showing the Great Wall and Karakum or Holin, Seat of Genghiz Kahns Emp r e. , New Guinea showing A Level open Country , the islands of New Zealand labelled in Maori EAHEI NOMAUWE and TAVAI POENAMOO , Africa showing Bahr Abiad or White Nile and Tribes of the Galla and Somauli in the east, North America showing territories for the Sho-sho-nee or Snake Ind s. and others, Burntwood carrying place and Volcano and Rufsian Factory in Alaska, north-eastern Siberia showing Here Shelanroff wintered in 1761 previous to his proceeding eastward and land seen here in 1849 as an obvious late addition ( several small areas of abrasion, discolouration, rubbing and neat repair ) with engraved brass hour dial and meridian circle, the oak horizon with hand-coloured engraved paper ring with degrees in two directions, wind directions, days of the houses of the Zodiac with pictures, names and symbols, and days of the month, raised on three baluster turned oak legs united by cross-stretchers -- 23in.
