SMITH & Son, Charles, London, c.1835 A handsome pair of 19-inch (48.3cm.) diameter library globes made up of twelve hand coloured engraved gores, the terrestrial with trade label reading SMITH'S TERRESTRIAL GLOBE Containing the whole of THE LATEST DISCOVERIES AND Geographical Improvements also the TRACKS of the most celebrated Circumnavigators LONDON C. SMITH & SON 172 STRAND , the equatorial graduated in degrees in two directions, hours and minutes, the Greenwich meridian graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with symbols, the oceans with an analemma labelled TABLE OF EQUATION , and numerous tracks of explorers including Vancouver, La Perouse, Columbus, Gore, Cook, Furneaux, Phipps, Clerke and Ross with dates, and other notes, such as Low Is covered with Wood 1814 , Tracks frequently made towards Bombay &c in the S t h.W s t. Monsoon between Mar. & Oct r. , Submarine Volcano , Nov r.7.1779 Small land Birds & great quantities of Pumice stone , THE ORDINARY COURSE of the FLORIDA STREAM , M. de la Perouse arrived in Botany Bay Jan y. 24 1788 & has not been heard of since he left that place, supposed to have foundered at Sea and every soul Perished. and very many other notes, the Antarctic showing I.Alexander disco d. by Bellinghausen in 1821 , Weddells farthest 1823 and Enderby's Land disco d. by Capt n. Biscoe 1832 , the continents with some areas of Africa and South America coloured in green, and showing mountains, rivers, lakes, deserts, oases, towns, cities, the Chinese Wall and numerous notes, such as First Residence of the Kirgees and Guinnak reported Capital of Chinese Tartary (China), Explored by D r. Ouney, Major Denham & Lieu t. Clapperton 1822-3-4 (Northern Africa), Route of the Nineamay Traders , UNKNOWN PARTS and COUNTRY OF THE JAGAS (Central Africa) and very many others ( numerous abrasions and areas of discolouration, various areas showing rubbing with small loss of detail, Antarctica with numerous light scratches and a hole approx. 1.5cm. diameter with paper loss ); the celestial with trade label reading SMITH'S CELESTIAL GLOBE Containing all the principal Stars Compiled from the Works of WOLLASTON, FLAMSTEED, DE LA CAILLE, HEVELIUS, MAYER, BRADLEY, HERSCHEL, MASKELYNE, the Transactions of the ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY of LONDON &c.&c. LONDON. C. SMITH & SON. 172. STRAND a further note reading N.B. Greek Letters or Figures prefixed to Stars refer to the British Catalogue. A Stroke under the Figures thus, 540, to De la Caille, H. Hevelius, M. Mayer, CH. Herschel, B. Bradley &c. , the gores laid to the ecliptic poles, the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours, the meridians and colures graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac with names for the former and symbols for the latter, the constellations depicted by delicately coloured mythical beasts, figures and scientific instruments with nebulae and stars to nine orders of magnitude, some named, all labelled with Greek letters or figures, all labelling of stars and constellations in Latin ( most of the surface fine but with crazing to varnish, darker crazing over one quarter of the northern hemisphere with rubbing and some loss of detail, small area of paper loss covered with sellotape, hole approx. 4.5 x 2cm. with paper loss and surrounding rubbing and redrawing ), both spheres with engraved brass hour dial and meridian circle, the hand-coloured engraved paper horizon ring graduated in degrees in two directions, days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac, with names and symbols, and also showing compass directions ( both with numerous old cracks, rubbing, discolouration and fading ), the mahogany horizon supported by four fluted quadrant supports to baluster turned central column with three inswept legs with brass castors and 9-inch (23cm.) diameter compass with original needle, copied card -- 40in.
