Boston: Wm. C. Hill, 1844. The rare first edition. Smith discusses eighteen voyages, including seven whaling expeditions. He also recounts his experiences sealing, particularly in the South Shetland Islands in 1820, a year after their discovery. Howes S-679; Rosove 312.A1; Sabin 84420; Spence 1139. 12mo (180 x 113mm). Front endpaper replaced, lacking initial blank or half-title, some dampstaining. Contemporary sheep. Provenance : Bonhams New York, 19 October 2009, lot 455.
