The "big Healey" 3000 Mk III fully retained the essence of its curvaceous long hood/short deck progenitor, the Austin-Healey 100/4 sports convertible of 1953. Designed as a sports car and indeed quite successful in rallying and racing, the Austin Healey had by the mid-1960s evolved into the fully civilized 3000 Mk III. Equipped with roll-up side windows, this 2+2 tourer was quite enjoyable for daily driving—while its 2,912cc 150hp twin-carb six-cylinder engine and four-speed manual overdrive transmission provided performance worthy of its sporting heritage. Shortly after the Mk III was introduced in 1964, "Phase II" upgrades were added that would further enhance the ride and handling of all subsequent Mk III BJ8 series chassis through 1967. The Austin-Healey 3000 offered here, a Mk III BJ8 in the most popular and luxurious Phase 2 form and therefore with the benefit of the revised rear suspension set-up, has been in the long term care of its current owner since 1968. It received a cosmetic and mechanical restoration from 1990-1996 during which the body panels were completely removed from the chassis. The interior was trimmed in leather and a new convertible top was installed. Extensive receipts documenting the restoration are present in the documentation file accompanying the car. Since this time the Healey has been used primarily for recreational touring. Representing the finest flowering of a most desirable post-WWII British sports car, this restored "Big Healey" is poised to bring to a new owner many pleasurable and memorable experiences. Proceeds from this sale will benefit the St. Thomas Legacy Foundation. Without reserve
