Somdelat Phra-Paramendr Maha Mongkut, KING OF SIAM (d.1868). Autograph letter signed (‘S P P M Mongkut RS’) to Alexis Redlich ('Gentleman'), Austrian Consul to Siam, Royal residence, Grand Palace Bangkok, 26 April 1868 ('6192nd day of reign'), in idiosyncratic English, thanking him for ‘dried leaves of sacred Bodhi tree’ sent from Ceylon, which are of the same character as those he has acquired from the original tree at Bodh Gaya, and, indeed, the 'many young Bodhi trees' he has grown from the seedlings of the latter himself, a fact of great importance given 'all Buddhist have their most respect to those came directly & ascertainedly from the original place of “Boddhagaya” at state of Bahare in India or Hindustan', and writing at the same time of letters exchanged with the Emperor of Austria, including death notices sent for a prince of Siam, one of the sons of his brother, Pinklao, Second King of Siam, 4 pages , 8vo (159 x 98mm) , stamps at head and end; with autograph envelope, and a letter from Redlich.

Written just months before his death, the present letter reflects the religious devotion and interest of the deeply spiritual monarch, who took the throne at the age of 47 after 27 years as a Buddhist monk. The gift of sacred leaves from the Bodhi tree in Sri Lanka from the Austrian Consul Alexis Redlich – who, the letter notes, was accompanying a Siamese envoy to the high priest of the monastery near Point de Galle – was evidently of deep significance for Mongkut.
