SOUSA COUTINHO, Manuel de (1555-1632). Plans, elevations, sections and views of the Church of Batalha, in the Province of Estremadura in Portugal, with the history and description by Fr. Luis de Sousa. To which is prefixed an introductiory discourse on the principles of Gothic architecture by James Murphy . London: J. Taylor, 1836. Large 2 o (563 x 370 mm). Engraved title and 25 plates (some foxing and soiling, few chips at edges). Modern half morocco, marbled boards. Provenance : John Hargreaves; John Philip Sousa (1854-1932), American composer (leather presentation label on front pastedown: "This book, for many years the property of John Hargreaves, Esq., a Citizen of Liverpool, was presented by the... Lord Mayor of Liverpool... to the Eminent Musician John Philip Sousa, at a Luncheon given in his honour... at the Town Hall, Liverpool, Fenruary 28th, 1903."); Tom Sousa (booklabel on front free endpaper). Later edition, a fine copy, presented to John Philip Sousa who is described on the presentation label as "a Kinsman" of the author. James Murphy (1760-1814) practiced as an architect in Dublin and was partly entrusted with the execution of Gandon's designs for the House of Commons. He was commissioned by William Burton Conyngham in 1788 to travel to Portugal to make drawings of the Church of Batalha and this resulting book was an important source in the Gothic revival. The work was originally published in 1795.
