SOUTHERN, Terry (1924-1995). "Candy. Screenplay...First Draft." New York: Francis Productions, [ca 1967-1968]. 4 o. Mimeographed typescript, 136 pages. Punched and bound in contemporary black wrappers lettered "Candy" on front (some minor wear); cloth folding case. SCREENPLAY OF SOUTHERN'S "CANDY." INSCRIBED on the title: "To Frank, in hopes that you will remember to cast our pic in a credible manner--i.e. no wags or other exotics to play our heroine--only prime Grade A girls from the U.S. of A! Hopefully yours, Terry Southern." This 136-page screenplay appears to be an early version, as a longer (148-page) screenplay is known to exist; it is labeled "First Draft" in the typescript on the title. The screenplay was credited to Buck Henry, then best known for writing Get Smart and The Graduate , making this most likely one of the earliest version, entirely adapted by Southern. Ewa Aulin was cast for the leading role, accompanied by an all-star cast: Marlon Brando, Richard Burton Ringo Starr James Coburn, John Huston and Walter Matthau. Southern adapted his novel, written with Mason Hoffenberg, for the screen. Candy , Southern's satirical take on Voltaire's Candide , was originally published in France in 1958, confiscated and banned for its sexually explicit content. Christian Marquand directed, produced by Robert Haggiag.
