SOUTHEY, Robert. Manuscript, partly in autograph, of part of Vol.I of the Annual Anthology , Bristol, 1799, including one poem, 'To Indolence', a printed extract from The Morning Post , 34 poems on 110 pages, 4to , original advertisement, the pages detached and tipped into an album, brown morocco, in a brown morocco backed slip case. Provenance : J. Payne Collier (autograph annotation); his library sold 1884; A. Edward Newton (bookplate). A PARTLY AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT FOR AN EARLY COLLABORATION BETWEEN SOUTHEY AND COLERIDGE. Although not a complete copy of the text for The Annual Anthology , the present manuscript has a number of interesting features: it contains the autograph manuscript for Southey's 'War Poem', cancelled in all but two known copies of the printed edition because of its unpatriotic nature; it contains the manuscript 'Advertisement', advising the reader that 'It is the intention of the Editor to publish annually a similar volume. Communications are to be addrest to Mr Cottle, Printer, Bristol' - although the printed Anthology was actually issued by Biggs & Co. In addition, the manuscript shows the close attention to pseudonyms which is marked throughout the collection as issued, with poems by Southey signed in full, but also as 'R.S.Y.', 'R.S.', 'S', and the anagram 'rthusyo', while Coleridge's contributions are signed both with his full name, and also 'Ryalto' (an anagram) and 'steeci' (S.T.C). The manuscript takes this further, with one pseudonym ('Walter') being in two cases cancelled and replaced with another ('Theoderit'). In spite of the variety of attributions, the majority of the present volume appears to be in Southey's hand, and the hands of his fellow contributors, including Coleridge and Charles Lamb, are not in evidence.
