SOVIET ARCTIC EXPLORATION – A complete set of six propaganda books, by various authors, for distribution at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Moscow: Foreign Languages Publishing House, 1939. A complete set of propaganda books extolling the triumphs of Soviet explorers in the Arctic. These were produced, in English, for distribution at the New York World’s Fair. The Soviet pavilion featured a 79 foot steel statue of a Soviet worker brandishing a star, which is reproduced on the half title of each volume. Five of the six authors had earned highest accolades: Hero of the Soviet Union, and the Order of Lenin. The works included are: Schmidt’s The Conquest of the Arctic; Gromov’s Across the North Pole to the Arctic , the front cover with an unsettling diagram of a Soviet plane flying to Los Angeles from Moscow; Vodopyanov’s Moscow – North Pole – Vancouver ; Fyodorov’s Scientific Work of our Polar Expedition ; Papanin’s The Soviet Wintering Station on the Drifting Ice ; and Krenkel’s Camping at the Pole . Arctic Bib. 15955, 35053. Six volumes, 12mo (143 x 110mm). Each with halftone photographic reproductions. Publisher’s original illustrated card wrappers, stapled (two titles [Fyodorov and Krenkel] with light soiling or faint dampstaining; staples lightly rusted). Provenance : two titles [Schmidt and Gromov] with the stamp of Roger Perkins; one title [Krenkel] with the initials ”ABR” in ink in the title margin.
