illuminated manuscript on vellum. (145 x 100 mm). 119 leaves only, including one blank, some leaves misbound. Collation: 1 (in 8s); 2-10 (in 4s); 11 (in 5s, possibly lacking i); 12 (in 6s); 13 (in 4s); 14 (in 6s); 15 (in 4s); 16 (in 10s); 17 (in 14s); 18-20 (in 8)s; (+ ii vellum fly-leaves).14 lines written in dark brown ink in a gothic bookhand between two verticals, ruled in red, rubrics in red, variations to the cycle of prayers represented in red ink, justification: 65 x 55mm. Numerous two-line initials are decorated on the infills with flora, fauna, figures or heraldry, painted in-text initials in red and blue, line fillers add to the overall rich coloration. 31 arch-topped miniatures in burnished gold frames above similar two-line intials, in full borders of dense, naturalistic foliage, flowers and fruit; insects and various whimsical birds, depicted in scrupulous detail with respect to the wide array of plant and animal species; 97 half-borders appear throughout in an attractive palette of reds and blues infilled with more vividly colored plant and animal life. Early 18th-century full black morocco, blind stamped in gilt on the upper cover with the Elmhirst crest of a chained hart. Condition: 2 leaves visibly excised, some borders slightly cropped and rubbed with slight loss of gilt; covers slightly bowed. Provenance: Edward Mars Elmhirst of Worsboroughdale, Yorkshire (armorial bookplate and gilt stamp to upper cover); the initials M.W. incised to back cover. a magnificent, richly decorated manuscript with many impressive details and enchanting borders. the full-page illuminated miniatures are beautifully executed.
