Numerous two-line initials are decorated on the infills with flora, fauna, figures or heraldry, painted in-text initials in red and blue, line fillers add to the overall rich coloration. 31 arch-topped miniatures in burnished gold frames above similar two-line intials, in full borders of dense, naturalistic foliage, flowers and fruit; insects and various whimsical birds, depicted in scrupulous detail with respect to the wide array of plant and animal species; 97 half-borders appear throughout in an attractive palette of reds and blues infilled with more vividly colored plant and animal life. Early 18th-century full black morocco, blind stamped in gilt on the upper cover with the Elmhirst crest of a chained hart. Condition: 2 leaves visibly excised, some borders slightly cropped and rubbed with slight loss of gilt; covers slightly bowed.
