Beschreibung:

Photographer: J.M. Maurer (1876 - 1953). Selected images of the Spanish-American War in Cuba. 1898. 7 collodion paper prints. Each circa 11 x 19 cm. 1 with photographer's name in the negative in lower right corner. In Cuba as of the late 1860s there were numerous revolts against the Spanish colonial power. America had its own economic interest at stake in Cuba and had long been looking for a reason to wage war on Spain. After the USS Main exploded from an unknown cause, the US blamed the Spanish and attacked the Spanish fleet and the Americans occupied the island after this victory. The Spanish-American War is one of the most important periods in American history and marks the beginning of its interests expanding beyond the North American continent. One image shows American soldiers at the Colon Cemetery in Havana ("the bone yard"). – All prints with diagonal mositure stains in upper left to lower right, a few with scratch marks, traces of previous mounting on the verso.
