There is a vertical seam visible, running the height of the canvas, 20cm. in from the right margin, with associated retouching. There are faint surface scuffs visible scattered throughout the composition, as well as patches of discoloured retouching in the dark background. There are five horizontal bands of retouching, possibly to old folds, at equal intervals, which run the width of the canvas. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a streaky and rather opaque varnish underneath which the aforementioned restoration is visible, as are some other retouchings: small spots scattered in the sitter's face, more concentrated retouching in his proper right hand, and surrounding his proper left foot. There are small strengthenings scattered in the inscription, as well as the glove that he holds. In overall fair condition. The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale. The
