DECORATIVE MAP OF AFRICA. SPEED, JOHN. Africae, described, the manners of their habits, and buildinge, newly done into English by I. S. and published at the charges of G. Humble anno 1626. London (G. Humble) 1626 (but later). Handcoloured engraved map surrounded by plans (on upper part) of Tanger, Ceuta, Alger, Tunis, Alexandria, Cairo (Alca), Mozambique and the Canaries, on the sides 10 native carte-a-figures in tribal costumes. About 390x510 mm. English text on verso "The Description of Africa, pages 5 and 6. Map engraved by Abraham Goos, with his signature at lower left. This is the first state, published and sold by George Humble between 1631 and 1632. Framed with double-glassing. Narrow margins. From Speed's atlas A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World. A decorative map of Africa and the first map of this continent prepared by an English cartographer, closely based on the maps of Hondius and Blaeu. Another edition was published by Basset and Chiswell in 1676. Provenance: The estate of Dr Peter Wallenberg (1926-2015).
