Folding engraved frontispiece by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) after John Evelyn (1620-1676), 2 folding engraved plates. Contemporary English calf gilt (worn, lower cover loose). Provenance : early press-mark on pasteboard inside front cover; William Rees-Mogg (signature in pencil on front free endpaper, dated December 1958). FIRST EDITION. "An eloquently written but historically unreliable account of the nature, organization, work and aims of the recently-founded Royal Society. The work represents the Royal Society's attempt to give itself a genuinely British origin, exaggerating the influence of Francis Bacon and suppressing the importance of contributions from Continental scientists like Haak and Mersenne" (Norman). It contains two contributions by Robert Hooke and one by William Petty. A CRISP CLEAN COPY.
