Allestry, 1667. 4 o (200 x 153 mm). 2 folding engraved plates (lacking the engraved frontispiece, occasionally some browning and staining).Later calf (repaired). FIRST EDITION. "An eloquently written but historically unreliable account of the nature, organization, work and aims of the recently-founded Royal Society. The work represents the Royal Society's attempt to give itself a genuinely British origin, exaggerating the influence of Francis Bacon and suppressing the importance of contributions from Continental scientists like Haak and Mersenne" (Norman). It contains two contributions by Robert Hooke and one by William Petty. Duveen, p. 558; NLM/Krivatsy 11326; Wing S-5032; Norman 1989.
