St. John the Evangelist and St. John the Baptist, in small miniatures on a leaf from an illuminated manuscript Book of Hours, on parchment [northern France (probably Paris), c. 1500] Single leaf, with a square miniature on each side (each a third of the page in height), with (i) St. John the Evangelist, as a clean shaven man in heavy red and blue robes edged in hairline gold brushstrokes, blessing a gold chalice with a lid formed from a winged dragon, and (ii) St. John the Baptist, as a bearded man wearing his hair shirt and a red robe, again edged with hairline gold brushstrokes, and holding his attribute, the lamb, both set within realistic gold frames, both with three-quarter decorated borders of richly coloured acanthus leaves and other foliage on dull gold grounds (that to the side of John the Baptist with a large monkey-faced winged drollery, sticking out its tongue and climbing the foliage with its feet, initials in colour or liquid gold on contrasting grounds, and both sides with single column of 22 lines of a professional late gothic lettre bâtarde, some small scuffs and stains to outer and lower borders through thumbing, tiny chips from both saints, small split in lower border to leaf, overall good and presentable, 158 by 105mm.
