STAËL-HOLSTEIN, Anne-Louise Germaine, Baronne de (1766-1817). Autograph letter to [Joseph-Marie, Baron de Gérando], n.p. [Coppet], 'ce 18 juillet [1804]', 2½ pages, 8vo .
STAËL-HOLSTEIN, Anne-Louise Germaine, Baronne de (1766-1817). Autograph letter to [Joseph-Marie, Baron de Gérando], n.p. [Coppet], 'ce 18 juillet [1804]', 2½ pages, 8vo . Madame de Staël smooths over a misunderstanding about having invited Gérando to accompany her to Italy: it was Camille [Jordan] she intended, who 'free, without ambition' must be enticed by the prospect of such a journey, 'et de plus il acquérait de grandes nouvelles idées et il faisait un acte de charité envers une malheureuse personne'. The anticipation of the arrival of Matthieu de Montmorency, one of her best-loved and most loyal friends, offers the prospect of consolation after the death of her father, Jacques Necker, 'ce sentiment de joye si étranger à mon coeur déchiré, cette douleur qui se ranime précisément parce qu'il va me faire du bien'. Banished from Paris and devastated by her father's death in April, Madame de Staël left on her first visit to Italy in December 1804, taking A.W. Schlegel and her children. She was to use her experiences of Italy in her novel, Corinne . Jordan, a former royalist deputy, had with Madame de Staël's encouragement written a pamphlet criticising Napoleon and was without any prospect of office until the Restoration. In 1804 he was still unmarried. Joseph-Marie de Gérando (1772-1842) was one of the group who assembled at Coppet during the Consulate; his history of philosophy which Madame de Stael has, in the present letter, just received, was published in 1804. Published in the Correspondance , ed. Béatrice Jasinski (1985), vol. 5ii, pages 385-386.
