[1793] , anticipating a visit to London, 'J'ai peur d'arriver à Londres avec un nom qui de plusieurs manières interésse l'esprit du parti, mais je m'assure en ésperant que Monsieur et Madame Locke me protégeront', and referring to her writing, 'un ouvrage sur le bonheur' which will pay homage to them; expressing great sorrow at being parted from them; on the re-establishment of communications with France and hoping for passports for two friends; Monsieur de Talleyrand will call on him 'et vous decidérez ensemble du sort de nos amis'; in one letter sending an account for wine, 'Vous vous occupez de nos interêts dans un genre au quel nous sommes hélas condamnés à mettre de prix - voilà donc cette note champagne ... 132 Chateaux Chalons ... 60 Tockay ... 36'; mentioning her husband who is in Paris and must come to England, and in all the letters professing her devotion to the Locks and their family, and her gratitude for their kindness and generosity, approximately 11 pages, sizes 110 x 80mm - 200 x 160mm . -- TALLEYRAND-PÉRIGORD, Charles-Maurice, Prince of Benevent (1754-1838). Autograph letter signed and autograph letter to William Lock, London, 2 March 1794 and n.d. , thanking him for his kindness and hoping later to have a passport to return to England, and referring to his destination, 'J'aurai l'honneur de vous écrire pour vous apprendre notre arrivé et notre premier établissement en Amerique', one page, 4to , integral address leaf; and (in 3rd person) referring to a letter conveyed by Monsieur d'Arblay, saying that the papers mentioned are destroyed, 'j'ai pris le parti de jetter tout mon bavardage au feu', one page, 8vo (integral leaf torn away); together with a letter by the Comte de Narbonne, ('You are alwais [ sic ] the same, the best and worthiest of men'), referring to Mme. de Staël; and two letters by unidentified emigrés, one asking urgently for two notes requesting Mr. Angerstein to pay ¨7500 to Mr. Boutdieu and the same to Mr. Andras, altogether 12 letters, approximately 16 pages . Madame de Staël was the leader of a small colony of French emigrés who arrived in England in 1792, and rented Juniper Hill, close to Norbury Park, the residence of William Lock and his half-French wife, Frederica Augusta. Talleyrand came to Juniper in 1794 but on the passing of the Aliens Act shortly afterwards was forced to move on, and sailed for America. William Lock (1732-1810), who was universlly loved and respected, showed the emigrés the greatest kindness. (12)
