STANLEY IN NEW YORK A carte de visite portrait of Stanley, circa 1863, 100 x 60mm. inscribed in a neat hand by Stanley (aged 22) "Always - your loving Nephew Henry Stanley the S.S. Minnesota", verso inscribed in ink "No2"; and a full portrait carte de visite of Stanley (aged 26) by Rockwell and co, photographers, 419 Broadway, N.Y., circa 1876, the verso inscribed by Stanley "To my dear Uncle and Aunt with the kind regards of their loving nephew ..................... alias Mr. Henry Stanley. Care Mrs MacNeal 20c Canal St, New York" (numbered 3). An important pair of images of Stanley as a young man in America, both cartes de visites sent to his Uncle and Aunt Owen in North Wales. At this period of his life Stanley had returned to New York in January 1863 after a disappointing visit to North Wales to see his mother. On his return, he did a number of jobs on various ships and also acted as a clerk to Judge Thomas Hughes in New York. Suddenly, on July 19 1864 he signed up for the Federal Navy. The deletion of his signature "John Rowlands" from the carte de visite began the cover-up that continued in his later life. (2)
