Italy Issue: June 1 - November 9 1944. A Bound volume of c.130 issues of the Stars and Stripes, in either 4 or 8 sheets versions. Folio. The newspaper documenting the progress of the War in Europe and in the Pacific, some issues with a special supplements for Readers Digest or Colliers Overseas. The paper somewhat browned and the edges sometimes fragile, a few small clean tears to margins. An important and historical period in the history of World War II, this volume covers the landings in Normandy and South of France, and the advance through to Holland, the push by the Russians to the borders of Germany, as well the island hoping campaigns in the Pacific. The Stars and Stripes was the GI's newspaper, published by the US Dept. of Defense, with independent military personnel as journalists, and was delivered to front line US troops around the world. It started in 1942, generally as a 4 sheet version, but with the growing campaign in Europe after the June 6th invasion of Normandy, with the increase in news, it expanded to 8 pages. The format was to have the latest war news on the cover always with a suitable page 3 pin up, and often with domestic American topics and American sports news. Given that very few of the issues delivered to the troops have ever survived, this news history only survives in bound volumes such as this. This example was collected together by a New York(?) News Library. The publication of this independently minded newspaper was a prodigious undertaking and throughout the war there were 30 different editions produced for different theatres of Operation, Pacific, North Africa and Europe. This is the Italy issue of the Mediterranean version, which cost 2 lire to purchase.
