Douglas, Stephen A. (1813-1861). American politician and 1860 Democratic party presidential nominee. ALS, 2 p., "Washington." July 8, 1852. Addressed to former Ohio Representative, John Woods (1794-1855). Douglas discusses the progress of the Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Indianapolis Railroad and its route to Chicago. Douglas was leader of the Democratic Party and orator. He championed the cause of popular sovereignty to determine issue of slavery in new territories and played a significant role in the Compromise of 1850. He was re-elected senator from Illinois in 1858 after a series of debates with Abraham Lincoln, only to lose to Lincoln in the presidential race two years later. John Woods served as a Representative for the state of Ohio from 1825 until 1829. Afterwards, he became president of the Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Indianapolis Railroad. A period copy of the letter written by Woods is in the lot. Condition: Typical folds of the letter with very light toning of the paper.
