STEREOGRAPHIC VIEWER] BROOKS, HARLOW. Stereographic viewer with three cabinets filled with the glass slide collection of photographer Lt. Col. Dr. Harlow Brooks . Various locations in America and Canada: 1915-1925. The stereo viewer of French manufacture with nameplate reading: Le Taxiphone Stereo-Classeur Distributeur Automatique Brevete S.G.D.G., with three wooden pedestal cabinets with drawers fitted to hold trays of glass slides, the viewer's electric light present. The viewer 21 inches high; the two larger cabinets 36 inches high. In apparently good condition despite some minor wear. Of note here are approximately 2000 glass slides and negatives housed in either the original fitted trays or in original cardboard boxes with the manufacturers printed paper labels present. Many trays and boxes are signed by Brooks or labeled in pencil describing and dating the images within. A few slides chipped but overall very well preserved. Lt. Col. Dr. Harlow Brooks was a noted physician and a recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal in WWI. Born in Minnesota in 1871, Brooks befriended a Native American medicine man as a boy and developed a lifelong interest in ethnography. As a photographer, Brooks toured the country often and his photographs are an important record of the time. This remarkable collection of slides depicts the frontiersmen, mountain peaks, fishing scenes and towns of the American west between 1915-1925, a time of dramatic change in the region. Brooks' slide viewer, along with his impressive collection of glass slides, many of which have never been reproduced, present a myriad research possibilities for institutions and collectors. C
