STEVENSON, ROBERT LOUIS. Autograph letter signed ("R L. S," written large) TO HIS MOTHER, n.p. [?France], n.d. [probably 1875]. 4 pages, small 8vo, on a Savile Club letterhead, fold creases, "Probably 1875" written in ink in an unidentified hand at top of first page. "EVER YOUR AFFECTIONATE PRODIGAL" An early (written at age 25), chatty letter: "...We're off to Barbizon for some more health & forest & ozone...I have a nice note from [Andrew] Lang about Fontainebleau. Read Stephen's Macaulay. Lang's French ballads [ Ballads and Lyrics of Old France , first published in 1872] is neatly enough ticked off. 'Altogether a most enjoyable number of this esteemed serial,' eh? I wish you hadn't sent me this Daily Review . I had to make a violent effort to throw off the bile I conceived from its perusal. I wish the filthy print were in -- well, let's say the bankruptcy court...Ever your affectionate Prodigal. O! do take some rum out to Swanston. I have become so fond of milk, I drink it noon & night -- although it used to put me in such a beastly plight." Provenance : Autograph Letters to His Father and Mother by Robert Louis Stevenson , Anderson Galleries, 17 February 1916, lot 159, dating the letter "[London, April (?) 1875]" -- Myles Standish Slocum (sale, Christie's New York, 21 November 1981, lot 560).
