Bologna: Alessandro Bennaccio, 1564. 4° (200 x 130mm). Large engraved folding plan by Domenico Zenoi (Evenly browned, plan with repaired tears and repairs in margins.) Blue crushed morocco gilt by Emile Rouselle, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (small holes in front hinge, small abrasions on front). RARE: EDIT-16 locates no copy. It is an account of the battle for Peñon de Vélez de la Gomera, an important foothold on the North African coast which has remained Spanish territory since being taken by the combined Spanish and Italian forces under the leadership of Don Garcia de Toledo. The fall of Peñon marked a significant new threat to Muslim power in the area and galvanized Suliman the Magnificient to attack Malta and put an end to the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem who had played a significant role in this battle. The outnumbered Hospitallers successfuly defended Malta against a 30,000 strong force in a battle that is now known as the last of the Crusades. A variant states of Zenoi's plan for Giovanni Francisco Camotio, presumed later, is known with no mention of Camotio's name, and possibly published in conjunction with Paolo Forlani.
