SUETONIUS TRANQUILLUS, Caius (75-160). Commentationes conditae a Philippo Beroaldo in Suetonium Tranquillum . With lives of the author by Beroaldus and M.A. Sabellicus, and life of Bartolomaeus Blanchinus by Beroaldus. Venice: Philippo Pincio, 18 February 1510. 2° (319 x 218 mm). Title woodcut (79 x 113 mm) depicting the birth of Caesar, repeated on a1r, and 72 smaller woodcuts, including repeats, all COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND in orange, green, blue, purple, ochre and brown, woodcut ornamental white-on-black initials in 3 sizes, the first initial colored, and occasional initial spaces with guide letters. MS verses by Ausonius on front flyleaf, probably written by Falck. (Some light browning.) Contemporary Swiss binding of blindtooled pigskin over wooden boards, two armorial stamps of Peter Falck on sides, two brass fore-edge clasps, probably executed in Fribourg at the Franciscan convent by Fr. Rolet Stos (d.1511) or his successors. Provenance : Peter Falck (1468-1519), title inscription "Petri Falck & Amicorum", binding, Ausonius verses on front flyleaf, occasional marginal annotations, by descent to; d'Estavayer de Mollondin, title inscription; C.H. St. John Hornby, Shelley House, Chelsea, bookplate; Viscount Mersey, Bignor Park, bookplate. SECOND ILLUSTRATED SUETONIUS, formerly owned by the Swiss humanist, Peter Falk. A native of Fribourg, Falk spent considerable time in Italy. After undertaking a diplomatic mission to Venice in 1512 for Cardinal Schinner, he was called to Rome, where he served as papal orator and as a diplomat for Pope Julius II. He also was in the service of the Duke of Milan. During his Italian travels Falck acquired a significant portion of his large library, returning with the books to Fribourg where he had many, probably including the present volume, bound at the Franciscan convent by Fr. Rolet Stos and successors. Falck's library passed to his daughter Ursula before being divided by her two sons. Each half then descended through the family (including to the d'Estavayer de Mollondins) until the late 17th century when many, but not all, books were given to the Capuchin convent in Fribourg. (See A. Wagner, Peter Falcks Bibliothek , 1926, for a list of 131 volumes containg 269 works, primarily those in the Capuchin convent.) The woodcuts had previously been used to illustrate a 1506 edition printed by Rubeus. The title woodcut depicts the birth of Julius Caesar and is the first woodcut illustrating a birth by Caesarean section; it appears again in the chapter on Julius Caesar Of the other 72 woodcuts, those which have shading were cut expressly for the 1506 edition. The verses by Ausonius written on the flyleaf belong to the tradition of Suetonius in print. Although they did not appear in the first edition printed by Lignamine in 1470, they were printed (without attribution to Ausonius) in the Sweynheym and Pannartz edition of 1470 and appeared regularly in Suetonius editions thereafter. They were not attributed in print to Ausonius until the Bologna edition of about 1477 (Flodr Suetonius 5). Adams S-2028; Essling 209; Sander 7144.
