In just four years, President Truman was able to appoint four of the nine Justices (Vinson, Burton, Minton and Clark); the other five were appointed by FDR. They heard some of the most important cases in postwar American history, such as Dennis v. U.S. (1951) which upheld the constitutionality of the Smith Act, outlawing the Communist Party; Shelley v. Kraemer (1948), which outlawed restrictive covenants in housing mortgages, and even a landmark slap against Truman in Youngstown v. Sawyer (1952), which struck down the President's attempt to seize steel mills during the Korean War.
