SURVEYOR 3 SPACECRAFT – Photograph signed. Conrad is photographed inspecting the Surveyor 3 Spacecraft on the Moon. SIGNED and INSCRIBED with their individual crew flight position designation and Apollo flight number by Charles CONRAD, Richard GORDON and Alan BEAN. Alan Bean photographs Charles “Pete” Conrad as he reaches to touch the Surveyor 3 spacecraft which landed more than 2 years earlier. The photograph illustrates two important flight objectives for Apollo 12 astronauts – to make a precision landing, as can be seen with the Lunar Module Intrepid on the horizon, and to bring back parts of the Surveyor lander for analysis. The robotic vehicle had been exposed to the harsh space environment of extreme temperatures, solar radiation, and a vacuum for over 2 years. Analysis of the returned parts would help to understand how a spacecraft degrades over time, allowing development on preventive measures for future vehicle designs. Large black and white photograph, 16 by 20 inches.
