Original wrappers. A THOMAS WISE FORGERY. The earliest record of this pamphlet was Wise's gift of a copy to the British Museum in 1890, autographed by Swinburne. Wise did not discover the real first edition -- a broadside issued in 1867 -- until 1897. Although the pamphlet is not a proven forgery, 'its authenticity seems open to very serious doubt'. This story was originally printed in Once a Week , October 1862, VII, pp. 432-4; and was not reprinted in the author's lifetime. The printing firm of Parker and Son changed its name to Parker, Son and Bourn on January 1861 and in 1863 to Longman and Co. The imprint, then, is an archaism. First printed in The Cornhill Magazine , September 1866, XIV, pp.331-3, the poem was not reprinted during Swinburne's lifetime. This copy has two changes to the original version. Wise maintained that Swinburne was responsible for the revisions -- a fact which Swinburne denied, claiming some twenty years after its alleged publication date, no knowledge of the pamphlet. The printer's name and address (J. Andrews, Clements Lane, E.C.) do not appear in Kelly's Post Office Directory of 1865, 1866, or 1867. Carter and Pollard, An Enquiry , pp. 278-84.
