Title: Symptoms of Drilling - Five hand-colored Etchings by H.B.H. Author: [H., B.H.] Place: [London] Publisher: Date: c. 1805 Description: 5 hand-colored etchings, each 14.5x42.7 cm. (5¾x16¾), folded vertically at center, trimmed and bound together in a slim volume. Full tan calf by Riviere, lettered in gilt on front and spine. A series of satirical colored engravings, in a style similar to Thomas Rowlandson depicting a motley crew of recruits engaged in the soldier's training. The margins of the prints were entirely trimmed prior to binding and the captions added by hand in the sky above the heads of the recruits. A bookseller's description tipped to the front endpaper attributes them to Rowlandson but the British Museum attributes them to an unidentified printmaker with the initials H.B.H. With the bookplate of film director George Cukor, inscribed to Cukor on front flyleaf. Lot Amendments Condition: Some scuffing to leather, front joint cracked; prints with evidence of prior matting, some wear at edges, a few short tears with old tape repairs on versos; good. Item number: 230873
