T. EVANS, publisher The Sky-Lark: containing a new, elegant, and much more numerous collection of English songs than any book hitherto published London: T. Evans, 1772. Oblong 12mo. (4¾ x 4½in; 123 x 118mm) (lacks S1-2 and two end leaves, the last being an advertisement leaf, heavy ink stain on D4v, R3 torn with slight loss on verso, R6 and U6 with clean but deep tears into text, other occasional tears and stains, some browning at beginning and end), bound for Goldman in red half calf. Provenance : J.W. Goldman (binding; sold in his sale at Hodgson's, 24 November 1966, lot 41 to Hannas for £4-5-0). FIRST EDITION. In addition to the songs themselves, this work includes a number of unrelated appendices, listed as: "I. A large collection of toasts, sentiments and hob-nobs. II. A new and correct list of all the Freemason's Lodges in Europe ... III. The art of swimming, diving and floating ... IV. A concise account of all sorts of river and pond fish .... V. Rules and laws to be observed at the game of cricket ...." (on Y3v-Y4r). This marks an early appearance of the laws, anticipating Hoyle by some three years. Although this copy is imperfect, the book itself is extremely rare. There is no copy in the MCC library, and ESTC records only 2 holdings, both at the Bodleian. Padwick (Supplement) 0165.
