T.J. Jackson, (Thomas Jonathan 'Stonewall' Jackson, CSA Major General), one and three-quarter page ALS (signature on reverse), Nov. 11, 1861 war-date military field letter headed 'Head Quarters, Valley District, Winchester (Va.)' to Major Rhett at 'Hd. Qrs. Dept of N. Va.', 'It is very important that I should have a good Brigadier General in command of my old brigade at this moment. The enemy at an easy day may cross the River at Williamsport and simultaneously with Genl. Kelley's forces move on this place. I recommend Col. A.P. Hill for promotion,...but if he is not available and Brig. Genl. R.E. Rhodes is, I respectfully request that he be signed. I have relieved Col. Angus W. McDonald from Cavalry duty and assigned him the command of the heavy artillery defences of Winchester and have accordingly placed Lt. Col. Turner Ashby in command of the Cavalry of this District. The Militia are turning out with commendable promptness though as yet no additional regiment has arrived here' , ms. docketing on reverse gives synopsis of letter and records 'Genl. Johnston was instructed in special orders Nov 16th to send one of the Brigr Genls assigned to ? Brigade to come and the Brigade sent to Genl. Jackson' , 7 x 9", some file folds not affecting signature, very fine, scarce and desirable 'Stonewall' Jackson field letter from the Shenandoah Valley Campaign , ex Sonneborn photo
